Case Study: Vanilla and Synthetic Biology

Vanilla is grown by an estimated 200,000 farmers worldwide. If synthetic biology companies are able to market chemical compounds derived from synthetically modified yeast, the labour-intensive vanilla production of those farmers -- and the biodiversity they protect -- could be imperilled.
